My name is Leanthony Stephens, and I work as a Military Personal Banker at Armed Forces Bank. I started my banking career on August 17th 2026, and joining the organization was my first opportunity to work professionally in the banking industry.
Before entering banking, I knew I wanted to build a career in finance, but I didn’t fully understand what working inside a bank would involve. My first impression was that this was a real “big boy” job.
There was a level of professionalism, responsibility, and attention to detail that made me realize I was entering a completely different professional environment.
I wanted to share my experience because working at Armed Forces Bank has introduced me to a side of banking that many people never get to see.
Quick Answer: What Is It Like Working for Armed Forces Bank?
From my experience, working for Armed Forces Bank has been a great opportunity to develop my banking skills while serving a customer base closely connected to the military community. My responsibilities involve everyday banking transactions, customer service, back-office work, and compliance.
Why I Chose Armed Forces Bank
One of the biggest reasons I chose Armed Forces Bank was the community and sense of security it offers. I was interested in working somewhere that served a specific community while allowing me to develop myself professionally.
I initially connected with the employment opportunity through networking outreach on LinkedIn and Indeed. What started as an opportunity to enter banking has become, to date, the most important action I have taken for my professional development.
Armed Forces Bank has a longstanding connection to the military community. The bank identifies its mission around serving active-duty service members, veterans, retirees, Department of Defense personnel, and their families. That community-oriented focus was something I appreciated when considering the opportunity.
What It’s Like Working on a Military Installation
One of the more unique parts of my job is that I work on an Air Force military installation as a civilian banking professional.
Working on a military installation is different from simply working at a regular commercial banking location. I interact with people from the military community every day, including active-duty and retired service members.
I also appreciate the environment. Going through installation access procedures and working in a setting with a strong security presence gives me a sense of security.
Something that surprised me was the variety of financial situations and banking needs I encountered. It gave me a broader appreciation for the financial responsibilities and banking relationships within the military community.
What I Do as a Military Personal Banker

The position of a Military Personal Banker involves handling everyday banking responsibilities for Armed Forces Bank. As a banker, it will be a combination of customer-facing banking and administrative responsibilities.
Approximately 65% of my work is customer-facing, while the latter involves back-office responsibilities.
My responsibilities include assisting with account openings, deposits, withdrawals, transfers, cashier’s checks, and other banking transactions.
I also assist with customer disputes and check-related situations, including matters involving affidavits of forgery.
One area that has challenged me professionally is working with trust accounts. These situations have helped me appreciate how important accuracy and understanding banking documentation can be.
I’ve also developed skills in cash handling, multitasking, and sales. These are areas where I’ve noticed considerable improvement since entering the industry.
Learning Banking Compliance and Regulations
If there is one thing I would tell someone entering banking, it is this: compliance, compliance, compliance.
Before joining the banking industry, I didn’t fully appreciate how many rules and regulations influence everyday banking operations.
Through my position, I’ve received training involving the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), fraud prevention, identity verification, and customer due diligence. I’ve also developed a better understanding of Currency Transaction Reports (CTRs).
Compliance education is an ongoing part of my professional responsibilities, and we receive training regularly.
The Workplace and People
Another part of my experience that I appreciate is the people I work alongside. I’ve had the opportunity to work with experienced banking professionals who bring knowledge and experience into the workplace.
The atmosphere can be professional, structured, relaxed, and fast-paced depending on the day. What I appreciate is that coworkers are willing to help when complicated customer situations arise.
Working alongside experienced bankers has given me opportunities to learn things that cannot always be understood through reading about banking alone.
The Challenges of Working in Banking

I wouldn’t describe banking as a job without challenges.
One of the more demanding aspects of my position is balancing accuracy, compliance, reporting, and speed.
Customers expect efficient service, but banking transactions also require careful attention to detail. Learning to balance those expectations has been an important part of my development.
The workload has been manageable, but the responsibility is real. When you’re working with people’s money, accuracy matters.
How Armed Forces Bank Is Shaping My Career
I consider Armed Forces Bank an important point in my banking career. Since August 2026, I’ve gained practical experience and developed skills that I expect to carry throughout my professional life.
I’ve earned additional professional credentials, including an AI Level 1 certification through Power Up Innovation and my Glia Certified Professional (GCP) certification.
Looking ahead, I’m interested in learning more about home loans, home equity lines of credit (HELOCs), and eventually commercial banking.
I don’t know exactly where my career will take me, but I recognize how important this opportunity has been in helping me understand the financial services industry.
Would I Recommend Working at Armed Forces Bank?
Absolutely!
Based on my experience, I would encourage someone interested in entering the banking industry to consider Armed Forces Bank.
My advice to someone starting a banking career is to learn as much as possible about banking products, finance, loans, interest rates, and especially compliance.
You don’t have to know everything on your first day. I certainly didn’t. What matters is being willing to learn, develop professionally, and take your responsibilities seriously.
Working at Armed Forces Bank has given me an opportunity to begin building the career I’ve wanted, and I’m excited to see where that experience takes me.

My experience working at Armed Forces Bank has been an important introduction to the banking industry. From working on an Air Force installation to developing practical knowledge of banking operations and compliance, I’ve gained an appreciation for the responsibilities that come with being a banker.
